1917 Evening Gown and Coat
Based on an original design inspired by extant gowns and production design work by Dan Hennah for “The Hobbit” Trilogy
This project was completed over the course of two months. It was inspired by several extant gowns and the location designs from “The Hobbit” movie trilogy. The gown was made from four yards of silk taffeta and one yard of silk chiffon. The bodice was lined with a glazed cotton. The beading on the bodice layers, skirts, and sleeves was done using a variety of glass and semi-precious beads.
The coat was constructed based off Paul Poiret’s cocoon coat designs from the period. It was constructed from three yards of a laser-cut velvet, three yards of a sturdy interlining, and almost four yards of silver lame. The fur collar is a vintage piece from my collection. The entire coat was cut as one and sewn together in the side seam. It closes in the front with two snaps.
This project was done as a personal celebration for the 85th publication anniversary of The Hobbit. There is a journal entry up about the research and design process for this ensemble!
